Aartik Sarma, MD​

Aartik Sarma, MD, MAS is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine and an attending physician in the medical ICU at UCSF Parnassus. Dr. Sarma completed an MD from Harvard Medical School, followed by internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then completed his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at UCSF, where he also earned a Master of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research. During his research fellowship, Dr. Sarma trained with Dr. Carolyn Calfee, an expert in molecular phenotyping of ARDS and sepsis, and Dr. Stephanie Christenson, an expert in the systems biology of chronic airway disease. Dr. Sarma has built a research program bridging clinical informatics and bioinformatics for computational precision medicine in the intensive care unit. His work has been funded by grants from the American Thoracic Society and the National Institutes of Health, including a K23 Career Development Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. His current work focuses on 1) characterizing disease heterogeneity in critical illness using multiomic methods, 2) developing personalized approaches to mechanical ventilation, and 3) applying machine learning and artificial intelligence tools to EHR and biological data to match patients to precision treatments.
